More about Brewster Reef

A boat trip to a reefBrewster Reef is an offshore coral reef south of Fowey Rocks Lighthouse.

Brewster Reef is an offshore coral reef south of Fowey Rocks Lighthouse. You reach it by boat; divers usually explore the reef and its drop-off on a drift. Some coral is within snorkeling reach, while the deeper edge is the draw for divers. This is a planned outing on the water, not a shore stop.

Use a mooringSeveral named visitor moorings mark the Brewster area.

Several named visitor moorings mark the Brewster area. The map pin uses Brewster 3; its charted depth is 12 feet, which describes that buoy location rather than the reef as a whole. Any one boat is limited to four hours at a visitor mooring, and using the buoys helps protect the bottom from anchor damage.

Staghorn coral and restorationStaghorn coral gives Brewster a recognizable branching shape.

Staghorn coral gives Brewster a recognizable branching shape. A 2020 photograph captured the reef a year after coral fragments were outplanted, a concrete glimpse of restoration work here. The branching coral and feathery sea fans are the visual signatures to look for underwater.
