Overview

Potato Bottom Campground is a remote, riverside backcountry stop along the White Rim Road in the Island in the Sky district. Tucked beneath red rock walls and cottonwoods at the Green River’s edge, it’s a serene place to bed down if you’re tackling the White Rim by 4x4 or bike. Expect big skies, hushed nights, and the kind of solitude you came to Canyonlands for.

What You'll See

From camp you’re looking straight at the Green River sliding past beneath sheer canyon walls, with cottonwood groves and riparian vegetation contrasting against open desert and distant mesas. When the sun drops, the lack of light pollution turns the night sky into a showstopper.

Access & Permits

This is a backcountry campground on a rugged road—high-clearance 4WD is required. It’s a popular overnight for White Rim travelers, and permits are required and competitive, especially in spring and fall. Plan ahead and secure your spot early.

Campsites & Amenities

There are three designated sites (A, B, and C), spaced for privacy on sandy and rocky ground. It’s primitive: there’s a shared vault toilet and no potable water or other services. Shade is limited; the cottonwoods help, but you’ll still be exposed to sun and wind.

Conditions & Challenges

Road conditions can be sandy, rocky, and technical, and they deteriorate with rain. Near the river, bugs can be a thing in warmer months, and the toilet can be odorous in heat. Bring all your water, food, and a solid desert camping kit; there are no stores or trash services—pack it all out. Fires are not allowed; use a stove for cooking.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for temperatures and permit success. Aim for weekdays to keep the solitude vibe. For photography, go early and late—soft light plays beautifully on the canyon walls and the river, and nights are prime for stargazing.
