Overview

Perched 630 feet above the ground inside the Gateway Arch, the Top of the Arch Observation Deck is an enclosed, gently arched room with narrow windows lining both sides. It’s the park’s signature moment: a quick, quirky ascent followed by sweeping views that make the city and river feel like a living map beneath you.

The deck itself is about 65 feet long and roughly 7 feet wide, with 16 small windows on each side (about 7 by 27 inches). On a clear day, visibility can stretch up to 30 miles.

What You’ll See

• East: The Mississippi River and southern Illinois spread out below—great for watching river traffic and tracing the floodplain.
• West: Downtown St. Louis, Busch Stadium, and the wider metro skyline.

The Ride Up

Access is via a custom-designed tram—there’s nothing else quite like it. The ride up takes about 4 minutes (about 3 minutes down), and the little pods are part of the fun, though they can feel tight for some.

How the Visit Flows

Expect the whole experience to take about 45–60 minutes, with roughly 7–10 minutes allowed at the top to keep things moving. There are no restrooms or seating at the summit, so plan accordingly and travel light.

This is not your typical tower. You’re inside a stainless-steel clad, weighted catenary arch, reached by a tram system conceived specifically to follow the Arch’s curve. The novelty of the engineering is half the allure.

Yes—especially if it’s your first time here. The space is compact and the clock runs fast at the top, but the perspective you get of the city, river, and the Arch itself is unforgettable. Wildlife isn’t a draw here; this stop is all about views and design.
