Galway's Bridge

Overview

Galway's Bridge is a low‑key access point on the Kerry Way, tucked beside Derrycunnihy Church. It’s a practical, scenic start if you want a quieter feel than the big hubs and a fast track into wild lake-and-mountain country.

The walk

From here, the out‑and‑back to the Windy Gap via the stepping stones runs about 5 miles and typically takes 2.5–3 hours. Expect a moderate effort with a few punchy bits, and plan for mud during wetter months—proper footwear makes all the difference.

Facilities & logistics

There’s a small parking area at the church, but no public toilets at the bridge. Nearest park restrooms are at Torc Waterfall’s lower car park, Muckross House & Gardens, and Ross Castle. Seasonal facilities are sometimes available at Dinis Cottage and Lord Brandon’s Cottage, and customers can usually find toilets at Ladies View Café when open. Hours can vary.

Wildlife

You’re in the heart of one of Ireland’s richest native woodlands. The wider park supports the only red deer herd on mainland Ireland—keep your distance, give them space, and enjoy the chance encounter if you’re lucky.

Best time to visit

Aim for drier spells to avoid the worst of the mud on the stepping‑stones route. If you’re relying on nearby facilities, double‑check seasonal opening times the day of your visit.
