What to expect
Jesup Path is the quintessential easy stroll: a long, photogenic boardwalk threading through white birch stands and the Great Meadow, the park’s largest freshwater wetland. It’s quiet, flat, and made for slowing down—think dappled light, birdsong, and open meadow views with Dorr and Kebo Mountains hovering in the background. Plan on doing it as a 1.6-mile total loop with Hemlock Path and a short stretch of the Great Meadow Loop, or simply walk the boardwalk out-and-back if you want the easiest experience.
Along the way you’ll find interpretive signs that actually add to the walk (skip-none material on the wetland ecosystem) and small platforms with benches for lingering. Expect a mellow, nature-forward outing that’s great for families, casual walkers, and photographers.
Trail surface and navigation
The boardwalk portion is smooth and flat—friendly for wheelchairs and strollers. Past the boardwalk, the tread turns to gravel and forest path with some roots and rocks, and the loop requires crossing Park Loop Road twice. There are no crosswalks, so build in patience for traffic. If you’d rather avoid uneven footing, turn around when the boardwalk ends.
Best time to hike
It’s lovely year-round, but late spring through fall is the sweet spot: spring brings wildflowers and bird activity; summer is lush and shaded; fall lights up the birches and surrounding forest with color. Winter can be icy and less accessible, but it’s peaceful if you’re prepared. For a quieter walk (and softer, low-angle light for photos), go early.
Logistics and tips
Start at the Sieur de Monts Nature Center area for easy parking, restrooms, and access to the Wild Gardens of Acadia. The park outlines the Jesup–Hemlock–Great Meadow loop; it’s straightforward if you watch junctions and stay alert at road crossings. Footwear: sneakers are fine for the boardwalk; choose something with grip if you plan to complete the loop. Leashed dogs are welcome. During busy periods, consider using the Island Explorer bus when it’s operating.
