Tomichi Route Closed; Gunnison Route Has Burned-Area Hazards
Do not enter the closed Tomichi Route or burned areas; the Gunnison Route has hazardous conditions caused by effects from the 2025 South Rim Fire. - Inner-canyon access is limited to the Warner and Gunnison routes by reserved permit, Red Rock Canyon by reserved permit, and other routes not burned in the 2025 South Rim Fire; all North Rim routes remain open. - The Tomichi Route remains closed until further notice. On the Gunnison Route, expect steep, unstable slopes, loose rocks, burned vegetation, and potentially hazardous, unstable trees because of the fire. - Wilderness routes are unmarked, physically demanding, very steep scrambles with loose rock. Hikers must find their own way and be prepared for self-rescue and an unplanned overnight because rescue can take many hours to more than a day; turn back if the route exceeds your capabilities. - These routes are not recommended for visitors with heart or lung conditions. A Wilderness Use Permit is required, and visitors must watch the Wilderness Routes Orientation Video before considering a permit. Check current inner-canyon route conditions before planning a route.Official detailsClosure
