Day use in unburned areas resumes July 1, but burned areas on Santa Rosa Island — including Water Canyon Campground — remain closed through at least August 13. Santa Rosa Island: Wildlife Protection Closures
In addition to wildfire-related closures, several areas of Santa Rosa Island are closed to protect sensitive wildlife. Backcountry beach camping is postponed until August 15, 2026, due to elephant seals. Specific hiking restrictions include: Skunk Point to East Point: Back beaches and dunes are closed through September 15, 2026, for snowy plover nesting. Visitors must remain on the wet sand or the road. Sandy Point: Closed year-round to protect seal rookeries. China Camp to Cluster Point: Beaches and dunes are closed year-round; travel is permitted only on marked paths.Official detailsClosure
