Food-conditioned bear in Arrigetch Peaks

Use a hard-sided Bear Resistant Food Container (BRFC) in the Arrigetch Peaks area. A brown bear entered camps and food caches on August 13, 2026 and obtained food from a soft-sided, bag-type BRFC, prompting NPS to strongly recommend hard-sided containers for all visitors to the area.

Hard-sided BRFCs are available to check out at the Bettles Ranger Station.
Backpackers in the area should maintain a high level of bear awareness and follow best practices for camping in bear country.
