Seasonal non-motorized waters restrictions
Do not operate motorized vessels in designated non-motorized waters of Adams Inlet, Rendu Inlet, Hugh Miller Inlet, or the Beardslee Islands through September 15. These restrictions protect wildlife species, habitats, and colonies and preserve an enhanced opportunity to experience Glacier Bay wilderness and its natural soundscapes. - The restriction applies to all motorized vessels, including seaplanes and sailing vessels with auxiliary motorized propulsion. - The NPS boating-regulations page lists these waters as restricted from May 1 through September 15. Temporary 13-knot whale-water speed limits
Boaters must limit speed to 13 knots through the water in Queen Inlet and on the eastern side of the Lower Bay designated whale waters until further notice. The restrictions protect feeding humpback whales by reducing disturbance and lowering the risk of whale-vessel collisions. - In Queen Inlet, the temporary limit covers waters bounded by the wilderness (non-motorized) boundary at the Rendu Inlet entrance and a line from the west side of that entrance to the mouth of the large stream just north of Gloomy Knob. - In the Lower Bay, the designated whale waters extend from the mouth of Glacier Bay to a line between the northern tips of Strawberry Island and Lars Island; the 13-knot restriction applies on the eastern side only. The annual 20-knot Lower Bay limit and the requirement for vessels over 18 feet to remain at least 1 nautical mile from shore or maintain a mid-channel course apply from May 15 through September 30. - All vessels, including kayaks, must stay at least ¼ nautical mile from humpback whales and must not alter course or speed within ½ nautical mile in a way that decreases the distance. If a vessel accidentally comes within ¼ nautical mile, slow immediately to 10 knots or less and alter course away; whales may surface unexpectedly, posing a hazard to vessels and whales. - Verify the current whale-water designations by calling 907-697-2627 or contacting KWM20 Bartlett Cove on marine VHF before entering Glacier Bay.
