The Old Boat House (Muckross)

Overview

A few minutes’ walk from Muckross House, the Old Boathouse sits on the shore of Muckross Lake. It’s both a pretty historic structure (there are “wet” and “dry” boathouses here) and the launch point for simple open‑boat crossings to Dinis Cottage and the classic Meeting of the Waters views.

Why it’s special

This shoreline rides a major geological boundary: Old Red Sandstone mountains give way to Carboniferous limestone around Muckross. Along the Dundag/Muckross peninsula you’ll notice limestone outcrops, solution features, and, nearby, the rare Reenadinna yew woodland. Muckross Lake itself drops steeply—among Ireland’s deepest—so the waterline feels dramatically close.

What you’ll see

• The 150+ year‑old wet boathouse built of local sandstone, with serene lake and mountain backdrops.
• Clear views across the Middle Lake toward Dinis and the Old Weir Bridge area.
• Lakeside limestone textures and, with luck, red deer moving through the woods.

Boat trips

Simple open‑boat rides run from the boathouse to Dinis/Meeting of the Waters (round‑trip or one‑way). Times vary by season and conditions—check the operators on site the day you visit. Additional tours also depart from Ross Castle if you’re building a bigger lake day.

The Old Boathouse Nature Trail

A waymarked loop (~2.35 km/1.5 mi; allow ~1.5 hours) leaves from near here on mostly surfaced woodland paths. Expect one flight of steps with a handrail. It’s family friendly, but keep children to the paths as there are nearby cliffs. Dogs on leash.

Practicalities & safety

• No toilets at the boathouse; use facilities by Muckross House (near the car park and café).
• The lakes shelve quickly—if swimming is on your list, use the gently sloping Goleen shore instead, and avoid inflatables.
• In warm, humid weather, midges can be pesky; ticks occur off‑track—cover up and use repellent.
• Access around Dinis/Old Weir Bridge can occasionally be restricted for restoration or storm damage—check National Parks notices before you set off.

Best time to visit

Calm mornings and late afternoons bring lovely, soft light along the water. Boats typically run mid‑morning into late afternoon; plan a crossing when the breeze is gentle. On blustery or stormy days, services may pause and the lakeshore feels harsher—have a backup walk through the gardens.
