Muckross House & Gardens

Overview

Set between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, Muckross House & Gardens is the stately heart of the park—a Tudor‑style Victorian mansion wrapped in lavish gardens and lakeside views. Built 1839–1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and Mary Balfour Herbert, it was painstakingly readied for Queen Victoria’s two‑night visit in 1861. Later owners (notably the Bourn/Vincent family) expanded the gardens before gifting the estate to the Irish nation in 1932, forming the basis of today’s Killarney National Park.
