Rob Roy Track: stop at lower lookout during avalanche season
From May through November, end your Rob Roy Track hike at the lower lookout; DOC strongly recommends against continuing to the upper lookout because the track crosses active avalanche paths.
- Avalanches can funnel from snowy upper slopes down to the track, even when no snow is visible on the track; continuing beyond the lower lookout puts you directly in the path of potential avalanches.
- Avalanche season in Wakatipu/Wānaka is usually May into November; avalanches are most likely during heavy rain or snow and for 24 hours after a storm.
- If considering going beyond the lower lookout, first check current avalanche and weather conditions with the local DOC Visitor Centre, know how to recognise dangerous avalanche terrain, and carry and know how to use a transceiver, shovel and probe.
