Elk rut restrictions are in effect
From September 1 through October 31, restrictions apply daily from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. in Horseshoe Park, Moraine Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Harbison Meadow, and Holzwarth Meadow to prevent disturbance and harassment of elk during the fall mating period and enhance visitor elk-viewing opportunities. - During the restricted hours, stay on established roadways and designated trails; off-trail foot travel and travel on closed roadways or trails are prohibited. - Fishing is prohibited from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the listed areas’ sections of Fall River, Big Thompson River, and Colorado River. Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect
Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect throughout Rocky Mountain National Park until further notice because of very high fire danger, the extended weather forecast, and current fire activity in Colorado. - Campfires, including charcoal briquette fires, are prohibited everywhere in the park. - Petroleum-fueled stoves and grills may be used in developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and designated wilderness campsites; stoves must use butane/propane twist-on canisters and be able to be turned on and off. - Liquid-gas (white-gas) stoves are prohibited everywhere in the park. - Smoking is prohibited except inside an enclosed vehicle or while stopped in a developed paved area devoid of vegetation for at least three feet. - Fireworks are always prohibited in Rocky Mountain National Park. Burn-area access remains closed west of Sun Valley Trail
The area and trail west of Sun Valley Trail remain closed, including the area used for angler access to the Colorado River, because approximately 30,000 acres—10 percent of Rocky Mountain National Park—were impacted by the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak Fires of 2020. - Sun Valley Trail has reopened; do not enter the area west of it. - Burn-area hazards include weak and unstable ground around burned-out stump holes; unstable dead trees, especially in windy conditions; loose rocks, logs, and rolling debris; possible flash flooding and significant debris flow; and dry, hot conditions with little forest canopy for shade. - Entering closed areas violates 36 CFR 1.5 and may result in a $5,000 fine and/or six months’ imprisonment.
