Fosshvammur permanently closed at Dettifoss

Fosshvammur at Dettifoss is permanently closed to all traffic; do not enter.

  • Heavy rain in early summer 2025 triggered a rockslide near Dettifoss and cracks appeared along the canyon rim; expert investigations found an extensive network of cracks hidden under the soil.
  • The park says Fosshvammur is no longer safe: daily waterfall spray, annual freeze–thaw, erosion, rockfall and ongoing crack formation continually reshape the gorge.
