Southern area closures and October deer-control restrictions
Do not enter the listed southern visitor areas during their closures, and plan around the October aerial deer-control operation.
- Stockyard Campground and Toilet Block are closed until further notice.
- Big Drift Walking Track and Stockyard carpark are closed while critical infrastructure works are undertaken as part of the Prom Sanctuary project; reopening is due in mid-October, pending completion of the works.
- From 5pm Sunday 19 October to 7pm Wednesday 21 October 2026, an aerial deer-control program will close Prom Wildlife Walk, the Northern overnight hike circuit, 5 Mile Beach, Big Drift, Stockyard Campground, Cotters Road, Cotters Lake, Cotters Beach, Vereker Outlook, Millers Landing, Boundary Track, Shallow Inlet via Hourigan Camp Lane, and Yanakie Cemetery Walk. These areas are also closed to access by watercraft.
- The operation is part of the park’s invasive-species control programs. Parks Victoria says introduced deer, rabbits, foxes and feral cats are major threats to nature; removing hog deer and rabbits reduces grazing pressure on native plants and plant communities, including nationally threatened ones, while targeting foxes and feral cats reduces predation threats to native species.
- During the operation, visitors may hear gunshots and see a helicopter flying at low levels. Follow closure signage and the on-site Operations Controller’s directions.
Check current Wilsons Promontory conditions before travelling.
