Overview
Perched on rocky Robinson Point, Isle au Haut Light (also called Robinson Point Light) is the island’s photogenic beacon and one of Maine’s more remote lighthouses. Built in 1907—the last traditional lighthouse erected in the state—it still serves local mariners and rewards visitors with a quiet, big‑water panorama you won’t find on crowded parts of the mainland.
What You’ll See
Expect a stout brick tower on a granite base with a classic black lantern, set right at the edge of Penobscot Bay. The scene is all rugged shoreline, spruce, lobster boats, and long horizon—prime for photos and lingering ocean gazes.
Getting There
Reach Isle au Haut by mailboat/ferry from Stonington, then walk or bike from the island landing to the lighthouse along local roads. Day trips are doable if you time your return boat carefully; staying overnight on the island gives you a calmer pace (the adjacent former keeper’s house operates as a private inn when open).
History
Established in 1907 and later automated, the light began as the Robinson Point Fog Station to guide the New England ground‑fishing fleet into safe harbor during storms. Community efforts helped save and restore the station, which includes the tower, oil house, and the keeper’s dwelling (now privately operated).
Wildlife
Scan the water for harbor seals and porpoises, and the sky for ospreys, bald eagles, and seabirds. The island’s woods shelter deer and small mammals—bring binoculars if you’re into birding or spotting marine life from shore.
Know Before You Go
There are no public restrooms, parking lots, or food services at the lighthouse. The island is rustic; bring water, snacks, and layers. Respect private property around the keeper’s house and expect the lighthouse interior to be closed except for rare events or guest access.

Sunrise and sunset are the magic hours here—especially if you’re staying on the island. For day‑trippers, plan around the ferry schedule and keep an eye on coastal weather; fog, wind, and rain can roll in quickly.
