Ship Harbor Nature Trail

Start at the signed parking area on Maine Route 102A and bear right at the first junction, following the edge of a narrow cove. The inner loop is mostly hard-packed gravel, gentle and shaded by large spruce for much of its western side. Near the water, the tread has a few low steps and exposed bedrock. At the center junction, pause for the view across the mudflat and the panel about its plants and animals.

Continue around the rocky headland for the second loop. The surface changes to forest floor, gravel, exposed ledge and short plank sections, with occasional log-framed steps. Watch for blue blazes painted on bare rock at the turn; the markings matter once trees give way to open stone. The path then returns through spruce and opens toward the parking area. Wet rocks and roots can be slippery, so shoes with traction are useful.

At low tide, the quiet cove opens onto mudflats and shallow pools among pink granite ledges. Fractures in the granite help form the tide pools; the shoreline is a good reason to take the outer loop slowly rather than treat it as a quick connector. From the headland, the view runs across Ship Harbor toward Great Gott Island and the open water. For a photo, keep a broad ledge or pool in the foreground and leave enough harbor in the frame to show where the shore leads.

The coast is used by common loons, common eiders, great blue herons, black guillemots, osprey and eagles; the spruce woods also shelter warblers and kinglets. These are possible sightings, not a promise. The smoother first loop is described as ADA compliant, but the trail entrance has a two-inch change in level and the outer loop adds uneven rock, roots, steps and planks, so the full figure-eight is not a uniformly accessible route.

The trailhead has vault toilets and two marked accessible parking spaces; the toilets are not accessible. Parking capacity and drinking-water availability were not verified, and no food service or public transportation is listed at this access. A park entrance pass is required for visitors aged 16 or older. Pets are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.
