Eagles Crag Trail

Eagles Crag is a short, scenic spur loop off the Cadillac South Ridge Trail on the southern slope of Cadillac Mountain near Blackwoods Campground. It’s the definition of high reward for low effort: about 0.3 miles total to step onto open granite and grab a broad look over the southeast corner of Mount Desert Island.

The spur leaves the forested South Ridge corridor, loops across rocky ledges at Eagles Crag, then rejoins the main trail a short distance uphill. Expect a gentle grade overall with a touch of rockiness near the overlook. It gains roughly 125 feet (rising from about 571 to 696 feet), so most hikers—kids included—can handle it without much sweat. Figure it adds just a few minutes to a Cadillac South Ridge outing.

Scenery is the hook: a quiet woodland approach opens onto classic Acadia granite with coastal-and-forest vistas. The ledges showcase Cadillac’s granite backbone—shaped by glaciers and weathering—and the approach passes through spruce–fir forest with mossy, lichen-covered rock. Birdlife uses the nearby cliffs, and raptors are sometimes seen riding the air currents.

Best time to hike: year-round. Spring through fall brings the clearest views and most comfortable temps; go early or late in the day for softer light and fewer people. In winter, this is a popular snowshoe detour and the open ledge can be dramatic—just know the wind bites harder up top and the rock can glaze over.

Tips

• Use it as a detour while climbing Cadillac via the South Ridge Trail, or as a quick out-and-back leg-stretcher from the lower forest. It’s less crowded than Cadillac’s summit and great for a fast viewpoint fix.
• Footwear with decent traction helps on the ledge. After rain or snowmelt, expect muddy patches in the woods and slick granite up top.
• Ticks are present—treat clothing and do a post-hike check.

Bottom line: It’s short, scenic, and easy. Not a destination on its own, but absolutely worth the detour if you’re anywhere on the South Ridge.
