Guide
Blackwoods Campground is a developed National Park Service campground on the east side of Mount Desert Island, about five miles south of Bar Harbor. Its 281 sites are mostly tent-only (221), with 60 RV-only sites and four group sites. Every site is wooded and within a ten-minute walk of the ocean. It makes a practical base for exploring Acadia, but expect a busy campground setting: layout varies, and campers often report close neighbors, noise and limited privacy.
All sites require an advance reservation through Recreation.gov; you can't reserve at the campground office. The vehicle entrance is off State Highway 3, with no campground entrance from Park Loop Road. That road has low bridges, and the NPS advises keeping vehicles and equipment over 10 feet 4 inches tall off it. The free, wheelchair-accessible Island Explorer serves campgrounds from late June to mid-October.
