From the Jordan Pond area, walk about 0.5 miles on the Jordan Pond Path and Bubble & Jordan Ponds Path, cross the Park Loop Road, then climb the South Ridge to the summit. The South Ridge segment itself is 1.2–1.3 miles one way; with the 0.5‑mile approach, plan on roughly 1.7 miles one way (about 3.4 miles out and back) via this route.
This is classic Acadia: a forested approach with dirt tread and granite steps gives way to an exposed, glacier‑carved granite ridge with sweeping views. Expect big looks at Jordan Pond, the Bubbles, Penobscot and Sargent Mountains, Eagle Lake, Mount Desert Island, and even the Atlantic on clear days. Above treeline, follow Acadia’s distinctive cairns across open ledge. Lower down you’ll pass spruce, fir, and birch before transitioning to alpine vegetation and lichen‑splashed bedrock near the summit.
Moderate to strenuous. The grade is steady and sustained, but this ridge avoids the heavier scrambles found on some of Pemetic’s other approaches. Footing is rocky and uneven, and the upper ridge is exposed to wind and weather. It’s a solid choice for fit hikers; it’s less ideal for very young kids and can be tough for dogs despite being allowed on leash.
Late spring through fall offers the best conditions and clearest views. Summer and early fall are prime—start early for cooler temps, quieter miles, and a better shot at parking. In winter the trail isn’t maintained; snow and ice can make the granite slick and hazardous, so only well‑equipped, experienced hikers should attempt it then.
Park at the Jordan Pond North lot if you can snag a spot; it fills fast in peak season. Consider using the park shuttle. You’ll need to cross the Park Loop Road—do it carefully and only where sightlines are good. There are no facilities on the route, so bring water and snacks and pack out all trash.
Wear shoes with great rock traction—wet granite can be treacherous. Keep an eye on cairns and painted blazes across slabby ledge. The summit is a superb picnic and photography spot, but bring a layer; the ridge can be breezy. If you want a longer day or a loop, connect with nearby trails and carriage roads around Jordan Pond and the Bubbles.
Jordan Pond North parking lot; walk the Jordan Pond Path to the Bubble & Jordan Ponds Path, cross Park Loop Road, then follow signs for South Ridge.
Wet granite is slick and the ridge is exposed—wind and weather roll in fast. Watch for cairns above treeline where the path can be vague. Use extra care crossing Park Loop Road. Terrain is rough for young kids and many dogs.
