Jordan Pond

Overview

Jordan Pond is a glacially carved, crystal-clear lake ringed by granite peaks in the heart of the park. The classic sightline looks north to the twin domes of The Bubbles—one of the park’s most photographed scenes. It’s beautiful, central, and yes, wildly popular.

Why it’s special

• A rare combo of scenery plus on-site dining at the historic Jordan Pond House on the south shore.

What to do

• Walk the Jordan Pond Path, a 3.3-mile loop hugging the shoreline with continuous views. It’s mostly easy, with some rocky stretches and boulder-hopping in spots.
• Connect to nearby routes: a carriage road runs along the west side, and trail networks link to Pemetic and the Bubbles if you want to go higher for an overlook.
• Bring the camera—sunset and even stargazing from the shoreline get frequent praise.

Wildlife

Keep an eye (and ear) out for loons, ducks, and other waterfowl working the edges of the pond. Amphibians and reptiles frequent the margins, and the pristine water supports freshwater fish. Larger mammals tend to be scarce here because of the crowds.

Facilities and logistics

The south end hub has the Jordan Pond House restaurant, restrooms, a gift shop, and water bottle filling. Parking exists here but is limited; the larger, more reliable option is the Jordan Pond North lot on Park Loop Road. The Island Explorer shuttle also serves the restaurant area, which can save you the parking stress. Note that this stretch of Park Loop Road is two-way.

Eating and the classic experience

Jordan Pond House is famous for tea and popovers on the lawn with the pond view. It’s a historic tradition and a big draw, so reservations are smart; the shortest waits are typically before 11:30 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

Best time to visit

• Timing: Arrive early morning for parking, calm reflections, and fewer people; late afternoon into sunset is great for photography.
• Day of week: Weekdays are less frenetic than weekends in summer and during fall foliage.
• Night: On clear nights, stargazing from the shore can be rewarding.

Bottom line

Jordan Pond is one of the park’s greatest hits—spectacular and convenient—but you need a plan for parking and dining. If you time it right, it’s a highlight of any trip.
