Grand Lake

Overview

Grand Lake anchors the east side of the park at the Achray access, combining a broad, scenic lake with a low‑key campground vibe. It’s the classic starting point for eastern canoe routes and an easy place to spend a lazy beach day before or after a trip.

What to Do

• Paddling: Launch directly from Achray for serene exploring or as Day 1 of a longer backcountry loop. The lake connects to well‑marked canoe routes with designated backcountry sites.
• Beach time: A sandy shoreline at Achray makes for relaxed swimming and lounging.
• Rentals: If you didn’t bring a boat, day‑use canoe rentals are available from the Stone House at Achray.

Getting There

Reach Achray via Sand Lake Gate on Barron Canyon Road. From the gate, drive 19.2 km west, then turn left on Achray Road for 4.8 km to the Grand Lake–Achray access and campground. Roads beyond the gate are gravel, so build in extra time.

Facilities & Services

Achray provides flush toilets and potable water taps, plus a small park store selling basics like firewood and ice. There are no showers or laundry, sites have no electricity, generators are prohibited, and the entire campground is radio‑free (with a portion dog‑free), keeping the lakeside atmosphere quiet.

Best Time to Visit

Achray operates from April 25, 2025 to October 26, 2025. For any water advisories, check park alerts before you go. If you’re planning an overnighter on the canoe routes, reserve well in advance.

Carry the official Canoe Routes Map—printed—along with a compass or GPS; use the digital version only as a reference. Expect variable weather, cool nights, and bugs in season, and practice wildlife‑safe food storage throughout your trip.
