More about Homestead Bayfront Park and Herbert Hoover Marina

Homestead Bayfront Park is a Miami-Dade waterfront park on Biscayne Bay, just south of Biscayne National Park’s Convoy Point headquarters. Its Herbert Hoover Marina gives boaters direct access to park waters; the neighboring atoll-shaped swimming area and beach make it a worthwhile stop even if you stay on shore. It is a county facility, so its fees, rules and services are separate from those at the national park.

Coming by boatThe county lists an approach depth of 3.

The county lists an approach depth of 3.5 to 5 feet and dockside depth of 5 to 6 feet, and says the marina can accommodate boats up to 50 feet. Check those limits against your vessel and current water conditions before setting out. The marina also lists fuel, transient slips, boat ramps, a bait-and-tackle shop and basic marine supplies.

The swimming atollThe park’s swimming area is a constructed atoll and beach beside the bay.

The park’s swimming area is a constructed atoll and beach beside the bay. It was excavated into the underlying rock after World War II and finished with sand hauled in from elsewhere. Some visitors have found the lagoon water murky or the sand muddy, so this is a better fit for a casual swim or picnic than for clear-water snorkeling. For photos, include the curved shoreline with the bay beyond it; that makes the unusual lagoon setting clear.

The county received the original land from South Dade Farms in 1938 and 1939, and work on the park began as a Works Progress Administration project in May 1939. During World War II, the site served as a 24-hour crash-boat base for Homestead Air Force Base; the military lease ended in 1947. The county later completed the swimming atoll and a larger marina. The county’s own history gives conflicting dedication dates, so the chronology is clearer without assigning one.

La Playa Grill Seafood Bar, restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic areas and a marine store are listed within the county park. Visitors have reported boat-launch queues and restricted vehicle entry on busy days; go early if getting a boat onto the water is the priority. The park and marina sit next to Convoy Point, but they are operated by Miami-Dade County rather than the National Park Service.
