Overview

Càrn an Rìgh is a remote-feeling Munro in the southern Cairngorms, rising above the head of Glen Lochsie. It delivers that big, quiet-hills vibe—broad, stony summit, long glen approach, and sweeping views—without the bustle of the nearby ski-area Munros.

Route & what you'll see

Most walkers approach from the Dalmunzie side, heading up Glen Lochsie on estate tracks before tackling the hill section. The route is frequently linked with neighbouring Glas Tulaichean, turning the day into a satisfying two‑Munro outing. Expect an initial track along the glen, then rougher ground with a short stretch that can feel pathless and very boggy. The summit area is broad and stony, with wide views when the cloud lifts.

Logistics

Parking is typically either paid at the Dalmunzie Castle Hotel (shorter day) or free at the start of the private drive, which adds roughly 2 km of approach. As you pass Dalmunzie, follow the track toward Glenlochsie Farm and use the signed detour that skirts the farmyard via waymarked posts before rejoining the main track up the glen.

Vibe & crowds

This one sees steady Munro traffic but is far from crowded; solitude is often possible even on weekends. It’s a great choice if you want a wilder feel without overly complex logistics.

Best time to visit

Go on a clear forecast to cash in the views and make navigation easier. The route is walked year‑round, but winter conditions can demand full winter kit and experience. After rain, expect slow, boggy going.

Safety & skills

Large, open slopes mean strong navigation skills are important in mist. Carry a map and compass and know how to use them—the terrain is exposed and featureless in places, and a boggy kilometre can test patience and footwear.
