Tucked into the Rothiemurchus pinewoods near Aviemore, Lochan Mor—locally nicknamed the Lily Loch—is a small, serene lochan that rewards a gentle stroll with mirror-still water, classic Caledonian forest, and a real sense of hush. It’s close to town yet feels wonderfully away-from-it-all.

What Makes It Unique

This is one of the spots connected to the recent beaver reintroduction in the area, so along the margins you may notice telltale signs like gnawed stumps or low dams. It’s a subtle kind of excitement: the thrill is in the looking, not the guarantees.

What You’ll See

Expect reflections of Scots pine on clear, sheltered water and, in summer, the water lilies that gave the loch its nickname. Forest paths weave through heather and moss, with the odd red squirrel, roe deer, or heron making cameos. Overhead, keep an eye out for passing raptors.

Getting There & The Walk

Most people start from the Woodlands car park in Inverdruie and follow waymarked forest paths to the loch. The route is short, mostly level, and easy to follow—ideal for an unhurried out-and-back or a small loop.

Wildlife Watching

Beavers are most active at dawn and dusk. Move quietly, scan the shoreline for movement, and look for fresh chew marks or slides. Binoculars help you linger at a respectful distance while still catching details.

• Dawn or dusk: best odds for wildlife, softest light on the water.
• Summer: lilies are at their showiest; bring repellent for midges.
• Autumn: the pinewoods glow with color and crowds are light.

Weekdays see fewer walkers, but even weekends are rarely hectic compared to bigger lochs nearby.

Know Before You Go

There are no toilets or cafés at the loch itself; plan to use facilities in Aviemore or at the start car park. Paths are generally good but can be muddy after rain—bring sturdy footwear and a layer for changeable weather.
