Overview

If you’re driving electric, this is one of the most convenient places to top up on the west side. Lake McDonald Lodge has two free Level 2 chargers—one Tesla Destination unit and one J1772—installed by the park’s lodging concessioner in 2016. They’re ideal for a slow, steady charge while you explore the lakeshore or grab a meal.

Where to find it

The chargers sit across the road from the Camp Store, near a small hut with restrooms. It’s an easy stroll from the main lodge and lakefront.

What to know before you plug in

Bring the right adapter for your vehicle. With just two Level 2 plugs, turnover can be slow at peak times, and availability varies. Users have reported that power is shut off during the shoulder season when the lodge is closed, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting in late fall or winter.

Backup options nearby

On the west side, there’s a DC fast charger roughly 15 minutes away outside the park. Inside the park, Apgar Visitor Center has a free Level 2 unit with a two‑hour limit during high demand (installed in 2024). On the east side, St. Mary Visitor Center added Level 2 charging in 2023.

Best time to visit

Early morning or later evening tends to be your best shot at an open plug; overnight charging works well if you’re lodging here. Summer is the most reliable season—shoulder seasons can see the station powered down. Weekday evenings are typically calmer than weekend afternoons.

You’ve got restrooms right by the chargers and the Camp Store for snacks, supplies, and water refills. The lodge area offers dining, a gift shop, and other guest services if you want to linger while your car sips electrons.
