Overview

Perched on the Kalbarri coastal cliffs, Castle Cove Lookout dishes up classic red‑cliff, blue‑ocean drama. From this vantage you’re staring straight at Island Rock and the Natural Bridge—fragile sandstone shapes carved by relentless surf out of 400‑million‑year‑old Tumblagooda Sandstone.

What You’ll See

• Island Rock, a lone sea stack that was once part of the mainland.
• The Natural Bridge spanning the churning Indian Ocean below.
• Wave‑thunder and spray on windy days—great atmosphere, but keep well back from barriers.

Trails & How to Do It

It’s an easy stroll on sealed paths from a large car park to several lookouts. If you want to stretch your legs, the Bigurda Boardwalk (about 1.2 km return) links Natural Bridge and Island Rock, and the longer Bigurda Trail runs 8 km one‑way between Eagle Gorge and Natural Bridge. Toilets are available at the car park.

Wildlife

From roughly June to November, watch for migrating whales cruising past the cliffs. Pets aren’t permitted in the park due to ongoing 1080 baiting.

Geology Snapshot

Those layered red and white cliffs are Tumblagooda Sandstone—ancient sediments sculpted by fracturing and ocean erosion into arches, ledges, and stacks.

Practicalities

There’s no drinking water in this area, so bring plenty. Expect strong coastal winds and full sun exposure; sunscreen, hat, and sturdy shoes are smart.

Best Time to Visit

Open 24 hours, but it’s most rewarding at sunrise or sunset when the cliffs glow and the ocean color pops. Early mornings are cooler; whale season (June–November) ups the wow factor.
