Rainbow Valley Lookout

Overview

Rainbow Valley Lookout is a quick coastal stop with big payoff: banded, multi‑coloured layers in ancient Tumblagooda Sandstone meeting pounding Indian Ocean swells. It works well as a standalone photo stop, but it really shines when paired with the short loop to Mushroom Rock.

The Walk

From the parking area you can do the Mushroom Rock–Rainbow Valley loop (about 3 km, allow 1–2 hours). It’s a Class 4 track with uneven rock, a few steep bits, and some steps near Mushroom Rock. You can hike the full loop or go out-and-back on either the cliff-top path or the more sheltered valley section, depending on wind.

Geology & Scenery

This coastline showcases millions of years of erosion etched into the Tumblagooda Sandstone. Along the loop you’ll see striking red‑white banding, ripple marks, and other textures explained on interpretive signs. The cliffs along this stretch are dramatic, and ocean swell plus sea breezes add atmosphere.

Wildlife & Wildflowers

Keep an eye out in the cooler parts of the day for kangaroos and birdlife like kestrels and bee‑eaters working the updrafts. Late winter through spring brings wildflowers; expect peak colour in August–September, with good displays continuing into spring.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer light on the coloured layers and cooler temperatures. Summer can be harsh across the park—start early, carry plenty of water, and give yourself time for the loop if you’re hiking.

Essentials & Safety

Facilities are minimal: no toilets, no drinking water, and little shade. Keep well back from cliff edges, watch for loose or wet rock, and be cautious in strong winds. Pets aren’t permitted (1080 baiting occurs in the area). Camping isn’t allowed inside the national park; base yourself in Kalbarri if you’re staying overnight.
