Mushroom Rock

Mushroom Rock is a coastal sandstone viewpoint on the Kalbarri coast, where wind and waves have carved delicate forms into red Tumblagooda Sandstone. The cliffs here rise more than 100 metres above the ocean, and the layered rock and surf are as much of the draw as the namesake feature. I'd keep it if you want a closer look at the geology; this is a rough walk, not a roadside pullout.

The full Mushroom Rock–Rainbow Valley loop is about 3 km; allow 1–2 hours. Start at either Mushroom Rock carpark or Rainbow Valley carpark. Expect loose rock, uneven ground and steep sections, with exposed stretches along the cliff. From Rainbow Valley, you can also walk out and back on the coastal path instead of returning through the more sheltered valley. Wet rock and strong wind make the cliff sections harder, so stay on the marked trail. Bring water; no food service is listed at the viewpoint. Pets aren't allowed in the park.

Look for the bands of sandstone and the thin shapes cut into them by wind and water. Tumblagooda Sandstone formed from layers of sand across a broad coastal landscape crossed by shifting river channels; those layers are now exposed along the cliffs. The view makes the geology easy to read, especially where red rock shelves meet the ocean.

This sandstone also preserves ancient trackways and burrows from arthropods. One probable hunting burrow, Tumblagoodichnus hockingi, was named for geologist Roger Hocking. These are traces of what animals did, not body fossils, and the finds tell a wider story about the rock unit; don't expect a fossil display at the viewpoint.

From higher on the trail, angle across the layered red rock toward the ocean so the strata lead the eye out. A lower view puts the rock shelves and surf in the foreground, but reaching it means dealing with the rough, steep descent. The wide coastal view is the payoff here, so take a moment to look beyond the namesake formation itself.
