Set just off Banjima Drive on the park’s east side, this is the brain of your trip—a striking, goanna‑inspired building whose weathered steel echoes Karijini’s gorges and is built to handle bushfires. It’s the best first stop to get oriented, pick up passes, and learn how to explore the country with respect.

Why Stop Here First

Road and gorge conditions shift with weather. Staff can steer you to what’s open, what’s 2WD‑friendly, and what to save for later—often saving hours of backtracking. It’s also where you can buy park passes and get concise safety briefings that make the rest of your visit smoother.

Practicalities

Hours are generally 9am–4pm daily, and the centre typically closes for about 6–9 weeks from mid‑December to early February. Card payments are accepted. Optus mobile service is available at the centre, and there’s a public phone. There are no bins anywhere in the park, so pack out everything. Water refills aren’t guaranteed—arrive stocked and plan on carrying about 5 litres per person per day in the park. In wet weather, leave gorges immediately due to flash‑flood risk; heed all signs and ranger advice.

Architecture & Culture

Beyond the exhibits, the building itself tells a story: its goanna‑like form reflects Banjima Country and underscores the centre’s role in sharing culture and creating local employment opportunities. It’s one of the more distinctive visitor centres in Australia, and worth a look even if you’re short on time.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for April–October for milder temperatures. On any day, be here at 9am to beat the late‑morning rush, sort permits, and finalise a plan before hitting the gorges. Expect a seasonal shutdown starting mid‑December, so check timing if you’re visiting in summer. Most people spend 20–45 minutes here—budget a bit longer if you want to watch the theatre pieces and chat with staff.

Safety Snapshot

Stay on marked routes, keep well back from cliff edges, wear sturdy footwear (even for short walks), and don’t feed dingoes. Supervise kids closely around gorge rims and water.
