I’d stop before choosing your gorge walks: visitors often value the staff’s practical advice on routes, access and what fits the time they have. The displays make this a worthwhile stop even if you already know where you’re headed.
A goanna in weathered steelThe building’s overlapping, rust-coloured steel walls form an abstract Kurrumanthu, or goanna.
The building’s overlapping, rust-coloured steel walls form an abstract Kurrumanthu, or goanna. Its shape carries a Banjima story: the tail represents history, the head points toward Traditional Owners’ future, and the centre represents Aboriginal Law. The red-brown steel also echoes the iron-rich country and the sheet-sided gorges around it.
The walls were designed with local fire in mind, using materials and a form that avoid places where burning debris can collect. From the approach, the goanna motif and the curved steel make the building itself the main thing to look for.
