Oxer Lookout

Oxer Lookout is a cliff-top viewpoint in Karijini’s Weano Recreation Area, where four gorges come together above a pool. I’d keep this walk near the top of a Karijini day: it gives you the big-picture view before you head down into one of the gorges. The outing is short, but the route can be rough and stepped, so give yourself time to reach the edge and take it in.

Look across the heads of Weano, Red, Joffre and Bilungunha (Hancock) gorges. The red, iron-rich walls drop about 100 metres or more to the gorge floor, where a pool sits in the shadow below. Once you’re there, follow the stripes along the walls and notice how quickly the open plateau disappears into the narrow gorges.

The banded iron formation began as iron-rich sediment and silica beneath ancient oceans, roughly 2.5 to 2 billion years ago. Oxygen released by microscopic photosynthetic life helped create the alternating mineral bands you can see in the cliffs. The gorge cuts came much later: uplift steepened the streams, and water gradually carved into cracks in the rock over millions of years.

Start at the Weano day-use area. Tourism WA describes Oxer as about a 15-minute walk from the car park; the 800-metre figure is for the linked Oxer–Junction Pool lookout walk. Trails WA notes short steep sections, rough ground and steps or rock-hopping, so don’t assume the brief distance means a smooth path. If you want a second angle into Hancock Gorge, continue to Junction Pool Lookout; for the four-gorge panorama alone, Oxer is the main stop.

From the lookout, keep a banded red wall in the foreground and leave some of the dark chasm in the frame. That contrast shows the depth better than filling the picture with cliff alone.

The gorge walls are high and loose rock can sit near the edges. There’s a safety railing at the viewpoint, but stay behind it and follow the park’s warning to keep well back from cliff edges.
