InfoUpdated

Brooks River Corridor permit required through Oct. 31

A permit is required for most activities in the Brooks River Corridor from June 15 through October 31.

  • The corridor includes the river and land within 50 yards of either bank, from the Lake Brooks inlet downstream to the elevated bridge and boardwalk; graveled roads and trails, boardwalks, wildlife-viewing platforms, and redfish-fishery subsistence activities are exempt.
  • Permits are valid for 7 days and allow groups of up to 6 people; they are free with a $6 booking fee.
  • The permit system supports visitor safety, compliance, and resource protection because the Brooks River is an important brown-bear food source and increasing bear populations and human presence pose inherent risks.

Review Brooks River permit requirements before entering the corridor.

ClosureUpdated

Seasonal camping closures at Hallo Bay and Geographic Creek

Camping is prohibited April 1–October 31 in designated areas of Hallo Bay Meadows and Geographic Creek.

  • Hallo Bay Meadows: The core meadows are closed because these prime feeding sites attract bears and bear viewers; the restriction helps prevent conflicts between bears and visitors.
  • Geographic Creek, Geographic Harbor: Camping is prohibited at the designated bear-viewing site to prevent conflicts between bears and visitors at this prime feeding and viewing spot.

Check the NPS closure-area maps when planning an overnight trip.

ClosureUpdated

Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes biking closure through Oct. 31

Biking is prohibited in the designated closure area of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes through October 31. The NPS page includes a map identifying the closure area; check it before riding.
