Seasonal closures restrict biking in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and camping at two major bear-viewing areas through October 31. - Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes: biking is closed April 1 through October 31. - Hallo Bay Meadows: camping is closed in the core meadow areas April 1 through October 31 to prevent conflicts with bears and visitors at prime feeding sites that attract bears and bear viewers. - Geographic Harbor: camping is prohibited at the designated bear-viewing site of Geographic Creek April 1 through October 31 to prevent conflicts with bears and visitors at this prime feeding and viewing spot. Brooks River corridor permit required

A permit is required for activities in the Brooks River Corridor from June 15 through October 31 because the river’s sockeye salmon run attracts one of the greatest gatherings of brown bears on earth. - The corridor includes the river and 50 yards from the water’s edge on both banks, from the Lake Brooks inlet downstream to the elevated bridge and boardwalk. It does not include graveled roads and trails, boardwalks, or wildlife-viewing platforms. - The requirement applies to all activities except redfish fishery subsistence activities. - Each permit is valid for 7 days for a maximum group size of 6 people. Permits are free, but a $6 booking fee applies; obtain one before arriving. Check current Brooks River permit information before visiting.

Resuspended volcanic ash near Katmai

Resuspended volcanic ash is affecting the Katmai and Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes area; visitors and pilots should account for hazards to health and aircraft. - Strong northwesterly winds are carrying loose ash from the 1912 Novarupta–Katmai eruption southeast. The National Weather Service has issued a SIGMET for this low-level event, with a suggested maximum cloud height of 6,000 feet (1.83 km) above sea level. - AVO says this is not recent volcanic activity and no eruption is in progress; it occurs during high winds and dry, snow-free conditions in the Katmai area. - Resuspended ash may be hazardous to health and damaging to aircraft. Griggs, Katmai, Novarupta, Mageik, Martin, Snowy, and Trident remain at Aviation Color Code GREEN / Alert Level NORMAL. Check the current Katmai volcanic activity notice before traveling near the area or flying.
