Use Caution in and around Pedersen Lagoon

Kenai Fjords National Park continues to advise caution in and around Pedersen Lagoon near Aialik Bay after a landslide-triggered tsunami washed over the area on August 7, 2024. The park's conditions page was last updated July 16, 2026 and still lists this advisory. Harding Icefield Trail: Upper Trail Snow and Snow Bridge Hazards

The park’s current conditions page still reports snow on the Harding Icefield Trail beyond Top of Cliffs (2.3 miles from the trail register) to End of Trail (3.9 miles). Hikers should use hiking poles, follow orange flags, and carefully assess snow-covered sections for hazards such as snow bridges over running water. Closure

Exit Glacier Canyon Emergency Closure

The area from the toe of Exit Glacier to the end of the canyon where Exit Creek opens into the Outwash Plain remains closed. NPS says the canyon is vulnerable to sudden glacier outburst floods that can send water, ice, rock, and debris through the area, and visitors must stay on designated trails and out of the closure zone.
