Opened in 1854, Great Southern Killarney is a grand, historic hotel set on six acres of gardens in the heart of town. It’s the classic in‑town base for dipping in and out of the park without a car shuffle—step off the train, drop your bags, and you’re walking or cycling to lakes, woods and waterfalls in minutes.

Using it as your park base

Borrow the hotel’s complimentary bicycles and roll straight onto the surfaced cycling routes around Muckross, Knockreer and Ross Island. The concierge can arrange traditional jaunting car trips—popular routes include Muckross to Torc Waterfall or to Ross Castle. Boat trips operate from Ross Castle and the Old Boat House near Muckross (weather and season dependent) for Lough Leane tours and hops to Inisfallen Island or Lord Brandon’s Cottage.

The park is known for its red deer and rich birdlife; lakeside routes give you the best chance of sightings as you explore. After heavy rain, Torc Waterfall puts on a show—time a visit if the forecast cooperates.

Best time to visit

For quieter trails and easier parking at Muckross and Ross Castle, start early. Book boats, house tours and jaunting cars in advance in busy periods; in shoulder or winter seasons, check what’s running day‑of. Check‑in is from 3 pm; check‑out by 12 noon, which pairs nicely with a morning spin before you depart.
