Why this loop
Cole’s Woods is the locals’ go‑to for an easy, shaded walk or run that feels more Adirondack than its in‑town setting suggests. Expect mellow grades, a forested vibe, and a friendly crowd. The main walking loop is about 1.8 miles total, with flat stretches and gentle rollers—great for beginners, families, and anyone looking for a quick nature fix without driving deep into the mountains.
What you’ll see and feel
The forest here sits on gently rolling, glacially influenced terrain typical of the southern Adirondack foothills. It’s not a summit hike—no big views—but you get a calm, woodsy corridor with plenty of shade. Keep an eye out for everyday wildlife like deer, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds. Near the highway edge, a short segment can carry traffic noise; most of the loop feels tucked in and quiet.
Trail vibe and use
This is a true multi‑use system: walkers and runners most of the year, mountain bikers on singletrack connectors, and in winter it transforms into a groomed cross‑country ski hub. A signature feature is the night‑lit routes—unique in the region—so evening laps are very doable when the lights are operating. In winter, skating and classic tracks are groomed on the wider 5 km lighted route; snowshoers should stick to designated snowshoe trails to protect the grooming.
Logistics and parking
There are several convenient access points. A reliable entrance is at 40 Parkview Ave; do not use F Street (private property). Additional parking is commonly used at the YMCA area, off Fire Road, and by the back of Aviation Mall. The network is well‑signed and well‑maintained by the Friends of Cole’s Woods, a community effort that’s been improving these trails for decades.
Tips and best time to go
This loop works year‑round. Spring through fall are ideal for easy hiking and running under full canopy; winter is prime for groomed Nordic skiing with many segments lighted into the evening (typically until around 10 pm). For quieter laps, go early mornings or weekdays—this place is popular. Bring a headlamp if you’re banking on lights after dark, and do a tick check in warmer months. Dogs are welcome on leash; expect to meet plenty of neighbors and their pups.
