Lake George Steamboat Company

The Lake George Steamboat Company runs narrated sightseeing and specialty cruises from Steel Pier in Lake George Village. It is a boat excursion rather than a place to roam on foot, so choose the sailing by route and length. A one-hour ride gives you a taste of the southern lake; longer trips take in much more of its 32 miles. If you mainly want scenery and commentary, I would choose a straightforward sightseeing trip. Meal and entertainment cruises make for a different kind of outing.

The Minne-Ha-Ha is the sternwheeler, with one-hour southern-lake rides and a steam calliope that plays between cruises. It is one of the last steam paddle-wheel ships in the United States. The Mohican was launched in 1908 and can cover about 28 miles of the lake or head into Paradise Bay and the Islands of the Narrows. The 190-foot Lac du Saint Sacrement is the largest ship in the fleet and runs two-hour sightseeing and meal cruises. Routes and trip lengths vary, so check which boat and itinerary you are booking.

Sightseeing trips are narrated, with the captain pointing out lake history and places along the shore. From the open deck, wooded hills, islands, homes and resorts appear in a long view that is hard to get from a single shore stop. For a boat photo, use a wider frame that includes the Minne-Ha-Ha's red stern wheel and the wooded shore; you get the boat's distinctive shape and its setting together.

The company began in 1817 as a commercial shipping line. Its first steamer, the James Caldwell, took about eight hours to reach the far end of the lake. The Delaware & Hudson Railroad owned and ran the boats from 1871 to 1939, making the lake part of a rail-and-water journey north toward Canada. The former railroad station across Beach Road, built in 1911, still gives the pier a tangible link to that travel era.

Cruises have snack bars and drinks aboard; sit-down brunch, lunch and dinner are tied to specific sailings. Some trips add music or other entertainment, so read the itinerary if you want a quieter narrated ride rather than an evening event. The Minne-Ha-Ha entered service in 1969, while the Lac du Saint Sacrement followed in 1989 after an eleven-year build. The current Mohican, launched in 1908, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

The operating season generally runs May through October, but boats and routes vary by date. The company's fee-based lot is across Beach Road behind the Station Gift Shop. Parking can fill or be confusing on busy dates, so leave a buffer before your sailing. Boarding and access between decks vary by boat; check with the operator about the exact vessel if step-free access matters. Pets are not allowed aboard, but trained service animals are permitted.
