A quick, view-forward climb that earns its keep, the Sendero Mirador is an out-and-back to two ocean-facing platforms. Expect a concrete path with lots of stairs, rated moderate mainly for the step count rather than distance. Plan on roughly 1.1 miles total (round trip) with about 308 feet of gain and 30–60 minutes depending on pace and time lingering at the overlooks.
What You’ll See
Two distinct viewpoints deliver very different angles: the first looks toward Punta Catedral and its offshore islets; the second frames a rugged, wilder stretch of coastline to the park’s east. The transition from dense rainforest to exposed platforms gives you that dramatic reveal of blue-on-green that Manuel Antonio does so well.
Wildlife
Keep an eye on the ground as much as the horizon—land crabs scuttle across the path, leaf-cutter ants parade their green flags, and agoutis are often spotted near the start. Iguanas sometimes bask near the top, and monkeys and exotic birds are frequently noted in the area.
Trail Flow and Connections
The trail begins near the park cafeteria hub. After enjoying both lookouts, you can return the same way or use the short Sendero Los Congos connector to link toward the Playa Gemelas and Puerto Escondido junction instead of backtracking. Note that the final segment to Puerto Escondido has had extended closures at times.
Tips and Best Time to Hike
This is the park’s stair-heavy option—bring water and take your time, especially in the heat. The dry season (December–April) typically brings clearer skies and easier logistics, while the green season trades in lusher scenery and fewer people. The concrete surface keeps footing straightforward, but the exposure at the viewpoints can be toasty, so plan a breather in the shade between platforms.
Access, Rules, and Suitability
Entry to the park requires a dated ticket reserved in advance; pets aren’t allowed. Due to numerous stair sections, this trail isn’t wheelchair accessible. If you want a longer outing after the lookouts, that Los Congos link makes a tidy loop toward other trails without much extra effort.
