Espadilla Sur brings white sand and clear blue water on one side, mangrove-edge greenery on the other. Large iguanas often bask near the shore, and you’ll see lizards in the trees. Connecting via the Mangrove Trail ups your odds of encounters—capuchin monkeys, coatis, birds (including toucans and macaws) are regularly spotted, and sloths are sometimes near the cafeteria area.
Route and Facilities
The simplest approach is from the main entrance along the elevated Mangrove Trail boardwalk; at the beach end, you meet the Espadilla Sur path with multiple access points to the sand. Restrooms/changing and rinse stations sit near the Mangrove Trail end of the beach. The Espadilla Sur path also ties into the main network, so you can fold it into a longer loop with the Sloth (Perezoso) Trail, Playa Manuel Antonio, or Punta Catedral.
Swimming and Safety
This side faces more open surf than Playa Manuel Antonio, so currents can be stronger—treat swimming here with caution. Keep an eye on your bags; monkeys and raccoons will rummage for food. The sand can get extremely hot at mid‑day; sandals or water shoes help.
Rules and Practicalities
You’ll see standard park rules in effect: stay on marked trails, don’t feed wildlife, and expect restrictions on bringing food and single‑use plastics. As of early December 2025, hours are generally Wednesday–Monday, 7:00–15:00, closed Tuesdays, and tickets are purchased online; bring ID. Go early for cooler temps, softer light, and better wildlife activity.

Difficulty is easy. The Espadilla Sur segment is dirt/sand, while the connecting Mangrove boardwalk is wide, flat, and designed for inclusive access. For the best experience, start early to beat heat and crowds, enjoy the shaded boardwalk approach, and use Espadilla Sur as a calmer beach base while saving your swim for the gentler waters at Playa Manuel Antonio.
