Overview
A quick detour with a big payoff, this short spur drops through coastal forest to a signed viewpoint above Puerto Escondido. It’s for scenery, not swimming—the ocean here is rough and there’s no sanctioned beach access.
Route and Distance
Plan on about 0.5 miles total out-and-back (roughly 0.25 miles each way) from the Puerto Escondido junction. The spur continues past Playa Gemelas and can also be reached faster via the Los Congos connector from the Mirador Trail. Expect a defined, hard-surface walkway and lots of steps to a single viewing platform, then return the same way.
Scenery and Geology
The lookout faces a wild, rugged bay with pounding surf and steep, rocky headlands. It’s one of the best places to admire Punta Serrucho—the serrated, “sawtooth” headland shaped by tectonic fracturing and uplift. At low tide, keep an eye out for a temporary sandbar that sometimes links a small islet to the mainland.
Difficulty and Trail Conditions
Easy to easy–moderate solely because of the stairs (roughly 140). Surfaces are a mix of concrete and wooden steps that can be humid and slick. There’s modest elevation change but the stair climb back up can feel steamy in the tropical heat.
Wildlife
Treat wildlife as a bonus: occasional monkey sightings happen along the approach and spur, but most people come for the views.
Best Time to Hike
Any season works. For photography and cooler temps, aim for early morning. Low tide adds interest if you want to spot the ephemeral sandbar offshore.
Tips and Access
This is a scenic add‑on, not a beach stop—bring water, grippy shoes, and realistic expectations. The trail has had closures for repairs; always check current status on park maps/signage at the junction. Entry to the park requires a ticket and advance reservation, and IDs are checked at the gate.
If It’s Closed
If the spur is roped off, the nearby Mirador Trail offers similarly sweeping Pacific views—longer and stair‑heavier, but a solid substitute.
