This quick stop on the Mesa Top Loop delivers a striking, straight-on look at Square Tower House—the tallest standing structure among the cliff dwellings. It’s a low-effort, high-reward viewpoint with a short paved path, solid railings, and excellent signage that makes the story of the site click.

What You’ll See

From the overlook you peer across a canyon into the alcove that shelters Square Tower House, with its namesake tower rising above surrounding rooms and kivas. The angle is perfect for photos and for taking in how the village fits into the cliff face.

Logistics and Amenities

There’s a proper parking area that accommodates cars, buses, and RVs, plus a seasonal vault toilet. You won’t find running water here, so arrive topped up. Expect little to no cell service on this stretch of road, so download anything you need before you roll.

Viewing vs. Touring the Dwelling

The overlook is free and easy—no reservation required. If you want to go inside Square Tower House, that’s only via a ranger-led backcountry tour that’s limited to 10 people, strenuous (steep drop-offs, switchbacks, ladders), and notoriously competitive to book 14 days in advance. Plan on extra drive time from the entrance and bring plenty of water if you land tickets.

Photography Notes

Light favors the site in the afternoon, when the alcove glows and details pop; around late afternoon the contrast is especially friendly for photos. You can also catch color in the canyon near sunset from this same stop.

Wildlife

This overlook area is a decent spot to keep an eye out for wildlife activity in the surrounding pinyon-juniper and canyon country while you linger—another reason to slow down and scan before you move on.

Best Time to Visit

Daily hours on the loop run roughly from morning into sunset; plan this stop for the afternoon for the best light on the dwelling.
For quieter moments, drop by earlier or later in the day outside peak midafternoon touring windows, then hang on toward sunset if you’re chasing softer canyon color.
