Step House is the most flexible cliff-dwelling visit in the park: a self-guided walk into a broad alcove on Wetherill Mesa where you can move at your own pace and linger with a ranger to ask questions. What makes it special is the clear layering of two eras—early Basketmaker III pithouses from the 600s and a later Pueblo III masonry village from the 1200s—set within the same sheltering rock.
The alcove formed within Cliff House Sandstone, part of the Mesaverde Group. Water seeping through porous sandstone and along tighter shale layers, plus freeze–thaw, spalled blocks away to carve the shelter. As you walk, look for desert varnish streaks on the cliff, subtle ripple marks in the sandstone, and seeps that would have been critical water sources for the community.
Expect roughly a 1‑mile round trip with a steep descent and return climb of about 100–165 feet. Surfaces are a mix of paved and gravel with some stairs, and there is very little shade—this area burned in the 2000 Pony Fire, so bring sun protection and water. Plan 45–60 minutes at the site itself.
Step House is typically open only when a ranger is present; hours and the Wetherill Mesa road status vary by season and conditions. The trailhead sits next to the Wetherill Mesa kiosk, reached via a winding 12‑mile access road with vehicle size limits (under 25 feet and 8,000 lbs). Facilities near the trailhead are seasonal.
Wetherill Mesa is quieter and rewards lingering. Pair Step House with the mesa‑top Badger House Community, the Long House Loop walk/bike route, and—if available—a ranger‑led Long House tour. Many visitors spend 3–4 hours here without feeling rushed.
Stay on the path, don’t touch plaster or climb walls, and follow any ranger guidance. These features are fragile and irreplaceable.
Go early in the morning for cooler temps, softer light in the alcove, and fewer people. Summer afternoons can be hot and occasionally stormy, and the shadeless approach magnifies the heat. If Wetherill Mesa is closed, shift your day to the Mesa Top Loop and return when Step House is staffed.
