Mount Rainier alerts

Grand Park 2 and Wonderland Complex fire closures affect trails, backcountry camps, and Sunrise access; stay out of closed areas.

• The Wonderland Trail from Carbon River Suspension Bridge to Frozen Lake near Sunrise is closed due to the Garda Falls Fire, part of the Wonderland Complex. Dick Creek, Mystic Lake, and Granite Creek camps are closed; Carbon River Camp, Ipsut Creek Camp, and the upper and lower Carbon River crossings remain open.
• The Northern Loop Trail from Berkeley Park to the Wonderland Trail junction near the Carbon River is closed; closed camps include Yellowstone Cliffs, Lake James, Fire Creek, and Berkeley Park.
• All trails in the Grand Park area, including Huckleberry Creek Trail, and Sunrise trails north of Sourdough Ridge, including Mount Fremont Trail, remain closed. No full Wonderland Trail circuit permits will be issued until further notice.

The SR 165 Carbon River/Fairfax Bridge is closed to vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians; there is no public access or alternate route to Carbon River or Mowich Lake.

• WSDOT permanently closed the 103-year-old bridge after inspections found new deterioration in its steel supports; follow-up inspections prompted the closure because visible changes showed the bridge was no longer safe to use.
• A nine-mile emergency detour is available only to first responders and local property owners south of the bridge; it is not open to the public.

Check current road status before traveling.

The entire Ohanapecosh Developed Area is closed through the construction project, expected to continue through February 2027; visitors may not enter or recreate there.

• The project rehabilitates 185 campsites and nine restroom buildings, replaces wastewater infrastructure, upgrades electrical and water systems, repairs roads, and improves accessibility.
• There is no vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, camping, or recreational access, including with pets. Closed facilities include campsites and group sites, the Cowlitz Indian Tribe Designated Use Area, visitor center, restrooms, auditorium, river access, picnic area, and parking; visitor-center services and permits, Wi-Fi, restrooms, fountains, and potable water are unavailable.
• The Silver Falls Trailhead in the campground and its connecting trail are closed, so Silver Falls cannot be hiked as a loop from Ohanapecosh. Reach Silver Falls from the Grove of the Patriarchs parking lot via the Eastside Trail or the Cowlitz Divide Trailhead; routes from the Grove trailhead are out-and-back only.

Check current construction impacts before traveling.

The Grove of the Patriarchs remains closed to all recreation because severe flooding in November 2021 caused major structural failure of its 1961 suspension bridge, which was removed for safety.

• NPS plans to construct a replacement bridge and trail route during the 2027–2028 seasons.
• The Grove parking lot has reopened for Silver Falls and Eastside Trail access; this does not reopen the Grove.

Summerland Trailhead is closed through the Fryingpan Creek Bridge replacement project; no parking or trail access is available at the trailhead.

• The 1931 bridge has exceeded its life expectancy and the riverbed has changed, requiring a newly designed replacement; preparation work is underway, with construction planned during the 2027–2029 seasons.
• White River Road is closed for the winter season; pedestrians may not travel through the construction closure zone past the bridge. Bicyclists may use the closed road but must follow construction signs and crew instructions.
• The Wonderland Trail remains open, with the nearest trailhead at White River Campground; Summerland Trailhead impacts are expected through 2029.

Check current construction and road status before traveling to Summerland.

Do not hike Tahoma Creek Trail: debris flows and hazardous conditions have taken over this unmaintained trail corridor.

• The creek has taken over the trail; only remnants remain, and navigation is difficult.
• Flooding and debris flows have occurred frequently and are expected to recur in this high-geohazard area, making the route hazardous; NPS does not recommend hiking it.
