US 101 Hoh River Bridge reduced to one lane

US 101 at the Hoh River Bridge is restricted to one lane of alternating traffic; obey the signals and 25 mph speed limit.

  • WSDOT found cracks in a support beam and steel members beneath the bridge that support its driving surface; extensive near- and long-term repairs are required before all lanes can reopen.
  • Temporary traffic signals at either end of the bridge alternate vehicles across the center.

Staircase wilderness trails and campsites remain closed

Wilderness trails and campsites around Staircase remain closed during recovery from the Bear Gulch Fire; the developed Staircase area, including the Rapids Loop, campground, and ranger station, is open.

  • The Bear Gulch Fire was declared 100% contained on November 12, 2025. Burned landscapes may contain falling trees and branches, loose boulders, unstable ground, stump holes, landslides, and debris flows; wind, rain, or storms can rapidly trigger hazards.
  • Closures remain while crews assess hazards and repair damaged backcountry infrastructure, including bridges and privies. Stay on open trails and respect closures.
  • Closed trails include Shady Lane; North Fork Skokomish from Staircase Rapids Loop to Home Sweet Home; Four Stream; Flapjack Lakes; Black and White Lakes; and the Six Ridge Primitive Trail from the east edge of Belview Camp to its junction with North Fork Skokomish.
  • Closed wilderness campsites include Beaver Flats, Slide, Spike, Big Log, Camp Pleasant, Nine Stream, Two Bear, First Divide, Smith Lake, Donohue Creek, Black and White Lakes, Flapjack Lakes, Madeline Creek, and Wagonwheel Lake, plus cross-country campsites accessed from the listed trails. Area closures may change as recovery continues.

Olympic Hot Springs and Whiskey Bend roads closed to vehicles

Olympic Hot Springs Road is closed to vehicles at the Madison Falls parking area because of a washout; Whiskey Bend Road is closed to vehicles because of the Olympic Hot Springs Road washout.

  • Both roads remain open to pedestrians, bicycles, and leashed dogs; Olympic Hot Springs Road is also open to stock.
  • The Madison Falls parking area and trailhead toilet are open, but parking and vehicle turnaround space are limited. No facilities are available beyond the gate; pack out all trash.

Possible rabies exposure near Staircase Bridge

If you may have had contact with the rabid bat near Staircase Bridge on August 9, promptly contact a healthcare provider and your local health department—even if you were not bitten.

  • At about 2 p.m., the bat swooped onto a woman and was temporarily caught in her hair; it also swooped at other visitors, and other contact is unknown. The woman should seek healthcare immediately and contact Mason County Health Department at 360-427-9670 ext. 405.
  • Rabies can spread through bites, scratches, or saliva; bat bites and scratches can be tiny or not visible. Prompt medical care can prevent rabies.
  • If your pet may have had direct contact, contact a veterinarian. Do not handle bats; keep your distance and notify park staff if you encounter one.

No potable water is available at Hurricane Ridge; bring your own drinking water.

  • A major rehabilitation project will replace the aging water system and upgrade utilities; construction continues in the main parking lot.
  • Portable restrooms and a temporary water system will be installed and used as needed. Asphalt patching and road striping may require temporary rolling closures.
  • Services are limited and staffing is intermittent, so bring what you need.
