A relic of old Hawai‘i on the backside of the Road to Hāna, Kaupo Store is the little general store you hope to find when the road turns rugged and desolate. It’s part store, part mini‑museum, and very much a community hangout in a weathered, photogenic building along Piʻilani Highway near mile marker 35.

The store has served this remote ranching community for decades and stands as a reminder of a slower, rural Maui. Just inland looms the Kaupō Gap, a dramatic breach in Haleakalā’s rim formed by erosion and lava flows—part of why this area looks and feels so rugged.
