Wattamolla Dam Track

Overview

A super short wander with a payoff, the Wattamolla Dam Walk runs roughly 1.3–1.7 km return (total) from Wattamolla picnic area to a small freshwater dam on Wattamolla Creek. It’s more of a relaxed add‑on than a destination hike—perfect if you’re picnicking or swimming at the lagoon and want a leg‑stretcher away from the crowds.

Route

From the picnic area, follow the Coast Track north for about 600–800 m to reach the dam beside Wattamolla Creek. Expect mostly raised boardwalk with short sections of hard‑packed dirt/sandstone and a few sandstone steps. There’s a shallow creek crossing near the picnic area that can become impassable after heavy rain, so be ready to turn back if flows are high. Allow 30–45 minutes, lingering time included.

Difficulty & Trail Notes

Overall easy with minimal elevation, but it’s rated Grade 3 (moderate) under the Australian system due to surfaces and steps. It’s not wheelchair accessible and prams/strollers aren’t recommended. No pets (assistance animals excepted) anywhere in the park.

Facilities & Logistics

Base yourself at Wattamolla picnic area: flush toilets, picnic tables, and free gas/electric BBQs are available, but bring your own drinking water. Vehicle entry fees apply ($12 per vehicle per day). Gates are generally open 7:00am–8:30pm and the car parks fill fast on hot summer weekends—arrive early. Roads are sealed and fine for 2WD. Mobile reception can be patchy, so download maps before you go.

Safety

Be water‑smart: the lagoon and falls are unpatrolled and jumping from the waterfall is prohibited due to serious injury risk. Sun exposure can be high on boardwalk sections; pack hat, sunscreen, and water. After heavy rain, the shallow creek crossing near the start may be a no‑go.

Best Time to Hike

Spring brings heathland wildflowers. Summer is great for combining the walk with a swim, but start early to beat parking and heat. Winter is quieter, and if you continue onto nearby coastal lookouts you may spot whales between June and August.

If You Want More

For a bigger outing with sweeping cliff views, continue the Coast Track from Wattamolla to Little Marley Beach and back (about 7.6 km return, 2–2.5 hours, with a few short climbs).
