Wattamolla to Big Marley Beach

Overview

This is a scenic, easy slice of the Coast Track from Wattamolla to Big Marley Beach. Expect about 9–9.2 km return (5.6–5.7 mi total), taking roughly 2.5–3.5 hours depending on beach wandering and photo stops. The path is predominantly metal/wood boardwalk with some rocky slabs, gentle undulations, and long stretches exposed to sun and wind. It’s straightforward and gorgeous—more about views than effort.

The Route

Start at Wattamolla car park and cross the creek above Wattamolla Falls. Within the first kilometre you’ll pass Wattamolla Dam, a rock-walled “infinity pool” beside the track that makes a fun detour for a look or a quick dip. From there, the boardwalk threads coastal heath and striking, erosion-sculpted sandstone with big ocean views. Little Marley Beach appears first; continue another 10–20 minutes (about 0.6–1.0 km) to reach Big Marley’s dune-backed sweep and lagoon. Distances vary slightly because some people measure only to Little Marley or include extra beach strolling.

Swimming and Safety

Wattamolla lagoon and beach are the safer places to swim. Little Marley and Big Marley are unpatrolled and known for strong rips—better for a paddle at the edge or a picnic than a full swim unless you’re experienced. The route runs close to unfenced cliff edges in places; keep well back, especially in wind. Cliff-jumping at Wattamolla Falls is prohibited.

Wildlife and Scenery

Keep an eye out for birdlife along the cliffs and heath. Peregrine falcons sometimes patrol the bluffs, and during the cooler months you may spot whales offshore. Kangaroos and small shorebirds are occasional bonuses near the creeks and lagoon. The sandstone slabs can glow with colour after rain—bring a camera.

Best Times to Hike

Because it’s exposed, early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and cooler temps. On busy summer weekends the Wattamolla car park fills early, so arrive ahead of the rush. There’s a park entry/parking fee per vehicle, and a limited weekend/holiday shuttle operates—check the timetable if you’re planning to bus in.

Tips

• Treat this as an out-and-back to Big Marley (5.6–5.7 mi total); if you only go to Little Marley it’s shorter.
• Pack sun protection and plenty of water; shade is scarce.
• No dogs.
• Want more? A side trip inland toward Deer Pools from between the Marleys adds about 3.8 km return, turning the day into roughly 12.8 km total.
