Manitou Islands closed during dock construction

North and South Manitou Islands have major access and facility closures during dock construction; the passenger ferry will not operate in 2026.

  • NPS is relocating both docks because storms, shifting sand, and high water damaged them; the project also repairs historic buildings and replaces failing infrastructure. NPS says safety and resource protection are top priorities.
  • Closed on North Manitou: dock, village, and all potable-water sources. Closed on South Manitou: dock, village, lighthouse, group campsites, Bay Campground, and all potable-water sources.
  • The ferry cannot operate because there is no safe docking location on either island during construction.

Hunters may be present during fall seasons

Hunters may be present in Sleeping Bear Dunes while fall hunting seasons overlap with visitor use.

  • Several Michigan hunting seasons overlap and begin in mid-September. Hunting is permitted under Michigan laws, but not within 450 feet of popular park sites listed in the Superintendent’s Compendium.
  • NPS recommends that non-hunters wear blaze orange or other brightly colored clothing and consider hiking only on marked, designated trails and beaches to minimize contact with active hunters; many park visitors may be unaware hunting is underway.
