Seventeen campsites, houseboat sites, and a day-use site on Dryweed Island and nearby islands are closed through the end of October 2026 because of continued bear activity and unsafe bear-human interactions.

  • Closed sites: R6 Breakwater Cove; R11 Dryweed Island; R44 Harrison Bay houseboat; R53 Makinen Point; R61 Harrison Bay; R64 Mio Beach; R67 Stones Point; R71 Loon Cove; R72 Rock Shelf; R73 Dryweed Island North; R75 Harrison Bay SW houseboat; R76 Harrison Bay SE houseboat; R82 Dryweed Island S houseboat; R93 Lyle Mine Island; R101 Tango Channel; R100 Channel View; and R107 Harrison Bay E day use.
  • Bear activity typically increases this time of year; remain bear aware and follow all food-storage requirements.

Use caution while boating on Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand Point Lakes because park hazard markers and secondary navigation aids have been removed, and most primary navigational buoys are also absent.

  • The U.S. Coast Guard Lamplighters removed most primary navigational aids; the absence of park hazard markers and secondary aids makes navigation more challenging.
