Biscuit Basin Overlook

Overview

A short, steep spur off the Mystic Falls Trail leads to Biscuit Basin Overlook—an elevated perch with sweeping views across Biscuit Basin, the Little Firehole and Firehole Rivers, and hillsides that frame the Upper Geyser Basin. It’s the kind of vantage that helps the whole hydrothermal landscape click into place.

Access and current status

As of July 23, 2024, Biscuit Basin is closed due to a hydrothermal explosion, and access to trails that begin there (including the route to this overlook) is affected. Re-check the latest status the day you visit. When the area reopens, you’ll start on the Biscuit Basin boardwalk, follow the Mystic Falls Trail along the creek, then take a signed, steep ascent to the overlook.

What you’ll see

From above, you’ll look back over Biscuit Basin’s colorful pools and small geysers, the ribbon of the Firehole system, and forested slopes on the Madison Plateau. It’s a compact, dramatic panorama that complements time spent down on the boardwalk among features like Sapphire Pool, Mustard Spring, and Jewel Geyser.

Safety essentials

Hydrothermal areas are unforgiving: stay on boardwalks and designated trails, and supervise kids closely. Beyond the boardwalk, this is bear country—carry bear spray and stay alert. Bison occasionally move through the basin and cross walkways; give them plenty of space.

Is it worth it?

When open, yes—especially if you already plan to visit Biscuit Basin or hike to Mystic Falls. The overlook’s quick effort-to-reward ratio makes it a smart add-on for a broader Upper Geyser Basin day.

Best time to visit

Once the area reopens, go early or late in the day to find parking at Biscuit Basin, enjoy quieter trails, and softer light across the basin. Midday brings more crowds and fuller lots.
